"I once shared an apartment so small I could touch both walls of my bedroom when I stretched out my arms."

That reminds me of a girlfriend's flat from long ago. It was round the corner from Baker Street and the London Planetarium. I used to reflect that both imaginative and cosmic space (the world of Sherlock Holmes, and the stars) were only a step away from her door.

Hannah -- Thanks for your kind comments about my story featured on this week's Selected Shorts. As you're in Positano, here's another of my stories, set in Positano, and featured on This American Life (with Dani Shapiro). Remember, the original sirens used to live there i.e. it's a dangerous town!

Thank you for the link to Selected Shorts - I was glad to download several podcasts from the series. Enjoy Positano -- it's one of my favorite places in the world. I'm feeling Sirenland-envy! :)

The Selected Shorts series is such an inspiring program, every week after listening I run to a blank page and attempt to write anything near as wonderful as the new tales I've just been gifted. I only just found your site Hannah, when I was trying to find out more about the man and woman introducing these magnificent works. I always wish that you two talked more about the stories together, what you thought they meant, and so I was thrilled to find your site. Thank you so much for all your insight, you always sound as though you are on the verge of laughter and your pure enjoyment of great stories is infectious.

Dear Sadie,

Sorry for the delay writing you back on this. By now you've probably finished your essay.

That was a good idea to write about Ren's hand, because his hand is not only a physical part of him that is missing, it is also the missing piece of his own history.

But your question seems to be about human nature. What does Ren learn about human nature? Well, he is exposed to a great deal of darkness, but within that darkness, also light. He learns that the world most often falls somewhere in between those two places. I don't want to give you the answers, but if you check out chapter 15, that's pretty dark. So is the chapter where Pilot eats soup with the bartender's hand, or any chapter that features McGinty. As for the lightness, look for the sections of the book where the characters show each other kindness. Look for Mrs. Sands.

Best,
Hannah

Dear Chris,

I'm glad to hear you and your sons enjoyed the book so much. I am hard at work on a new novel, which I hope to finish soon!

Hannah, The Good Thief is absolutely one of the best books i've read. I passed it on to my three sons and they loved it as well. The question we all have is - why haven't you written anything since then?? we eagerly await your next book!
