Barcelona

I’ve been in Barcelona the past few days to promote the Spanish & Catalan editions of The Good Thief with the good people of Anagrama. In a brief period of time I’ve learned quite a bit about this beautiful city, including their patron saint, St. Eulalia, who apparently had a dove fly from her neck as she was decapitated by the Romans, as well as the legend of the Cristo de Lepanto (a figure of Christ that came to life and dodged a cannonball during the battle of Lepanto in 1571). But perhaps my favorite discovery has been the Castellers, a Catalan tradition of building human towers. You can see a clip of them here.

Yesterday was a flurry of interviews, and now they have started to appear, beginning with this one I did with Público before I left the states, and now more have followed: La Razón, Europa Press, and ADN. I’ll add the rest as they come in. Anagrama, helmed by Jorge Herralde, is an amazing publishing house and the home of authors such as Nabokov and Roberto Bolaño. It’s an honor to be included on their list.

New Foreign Sales & Covers

I’ve got two new foreign editions of The Good Thief to share, and two more deals to announce. The first is a traditional Chinese translation, by Ecus House, which has recently been released and has this very cool cover to the left. The second is a Spanish translation, which will be released next month by Anagrama: El Buen Ladrón. Other good news is that two more are on their way. A simplified character Chinese edition, by Tianjin Hua Wen TianXia Books, and a Greek edition, which will be published by Polis. It’s exciting to see Ren making his way through all these other countries. This now brings the total to 17, I believe. Even more than Animal Crackers!

An American in Paris

For the next 10 days I’ll be taking part in Les Belles Étrangères, a festival hosted by the Centre National du Livre in France. This year they are hosting 12 American writers whose work has recently been translated into French and putting us on tour across the country: Charles D’Ambrosio, Percival Everett, Forrest Gander, Andrew Sean Greer, John Haskell, Matt Madden, Jack O’Connell, Eleni Sikelianos, Yuri Slezkine, Richard White, Colson Whitehead and me. I’ll be posting daily, along with Colson Whitehead, Matt Madden, Andrew Sean Greer and John Haskell. In the meantime, I wanted to share this shot of the fountain at Place de la Concorde, which I walked past this morning, after landing in Paris around 6 am, the whole trip already seeming like some kind of dream. For you fellow musical-lovers, this is the spot where Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron dance in American in Paris. I was having flashbacks all day–quite a beautiful moment in Vincente Minnelli history. Animal Crackers: Now in Chinese

Today I opened a box of Animal Crackers, translated into Chinese–traditional Chinese, that is–which is used in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau. It’s an absolutely beautiful book, produced by Ink.

What excited me the most about this version of Animal Crackers is that there are amazing black and white illustrations. One for each story. They remind me of Kara Walker’s work, which I love. My next email will be sent to Ink to see if I can get the name of the artist. Once I find out, I will post it here. But until then, I took shots of the pictures with my camera. For those of you who have read Animal Crackers, you will understand how perfect each of these illustrations are. For those of you who haven’t, go here to read an excerpt from the book. If you want your own copy, you can order it from Ink, but you have to be able to read traditional Chinese to navigate the site!
