Next Wednesday (Oct. 5th) I’ll be interviewing the Irish writer Anne Enright at Symphony Space. Best known for her Booker-Prize winning novel The Gathering, Enright is here in New York to launch her new book, The Forgotten Waltz. The Telegraph said of Enright’s work:

Hers is a style that glories in minutiae. She modulates so finely between comedy and pathos, between psychology and physicality, that she conveys a sense of the richness of lived experience, compared to which most other novelists appear to work in broad strokes. There are sentences in her work, whole passages even, that you want to mark up and learn off by heart for their warmth and humour, their sense of truth.

Post-It Note Diaries

Last year the illustrator Arthur Jones contacted me about an anthology he was putting together, The Post It Note Diaries. I wrote a piece for him about playing in graveyards when I was a kid and he drew some wonderfully eerie pictures. Now, the book is coming out! Next Tuesday, Sept. 27th @ 7 pm I’ll be reading my story while Arthur shows the drawings (a few are above). There will be many great writers and performers in attendance: David Rakoff, Kristen Schaal, Starlee Kine, Andrew Solomon, David Rees, Jeff Simmermon, Daniel Engber and David Wilcox. So come out to Little Field in Gowanus, Brooklyn and help us celebrate this excellent book. Tickets are $5 in advance, $8 at the door. Or pre-order your copy today! One Story Literary Debutante Ball

On April 29th, 2011, One Story is hosting our 2nd annual Literary Debutante Ball. This year we’re celebrating 5 One Story authors who have published their first books in the past year: Robin Black (If I Loved You I Would Tell You This), Susanna Daniel (Stiltsville), Seth Fried (The Great Frustration), Jerry Gabriel (Drowned boy) and Jim Hanas (Why They Cried). We’re also honoring the novelist and memoirist Dani Shapiro, for her extraordinary support of other writers. There will be food, specialty cocktails, music by Lapis Luna, and a silent auction of amazing art, curated by David Goodman. Graveyard Cake

Some of you might remember this graveyard cake, put together by a mother/son bookclub reading The Good Thief. Now another group of readers in Rochester, NY has decided to create their own graveyard cake inspired by the book. Soon I may have to sponsor some kind of bake-off, but for now I will simply enjoy and post the pictures (special thanks to Chris Fanning for sending this one along). Later today I head to Rochester for their “All City Read” of The Good Thief, and hope to meet some of the chefs of this magnificent confection. For the next four days I’ll be upstate, reading and giving lectures, handing out wishing stones, presenting cartoon slideshows and playing the ukulele badly in public.

I’m looking forward to heading up to Rochester, NY soon, where they are doing an All City Read of The Good Thief. To kick things off, Writers & Books is hosting a scavenger hunt: WITH REAL HUMAN BONES!!!!!!! It all takes place tomorrow, at participating First Friday venues in Rochester. About a dozen bones will be hidden–find one and you will win a copy of The Good Thief, or tickets to an event at the end of the month when I’ll be visiting. Thanks to the great organization Writers & Books, the entire city of Rochester, NY will be reading The Good Thief this winter. I’m heading to Rochester March 23–26th and going to bookclubs, schools, libraries, hospitals, churches, coffee shops and radio shows to talk with all the good folks of upstate New York who have given Ren a chance. Selected Shorts

Last November, a story of mine, “Milestones,” was broadcast on public radio’s Selected Shorts, an award-winning, one-hour program featuring readings of classic and new short fiction by great actors from stage, screen and television, recorded live at New York’s Symphony Space. My story was read by Laurie Anderson, and afterwards I was interviewed by the long-time host of Selected Shorts, Isaiah Sheffer. I’ve been a fan of the show ever since 1994, when I would listen during my commute from one job, working in a bookstore, to the next, waiting tables all night. At the time it was a real literary life-line for me, so you can imagine how excited I was to meet Isaiah in person. To fans of the short story, Isaiah is as famous as Elvis, and I found him to be just as charming in person as he is over the radio. Despite my nervousness, we had some fun. Now Isaiah and Kathy Minton, the director of Selected Shorts, have asked me to come on board as a commentator for the show, which means each week I’ll be interviewing writers and talking about the stories produced. The first episode will air this coming weekend, a special edition featuring “Safari” by Jennifer Egan, a fantastic piece that is included in her novel A Visit from the Goon Squad. For WNYC listeners, the show will air Saturday at 10 pm on FM 93.9 and Sunday at 1 pm on AM 820. For WGBH (Boston), the show will air Saturday at 9:30 pm on 89.7 FM. This coming Sunday, Dec. 19th from 1-4 pm I’ll be taking part in a marathon reading of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol at Used Housing Works Bookstore. Used Housing Works is a great organization that benefits the homeless and people living with AIDs, and they could use your support.
