Buttery Books, a great website that combines two of my favorite things, books & food, just posted suggestions on how to throw a Good Thief-themed bookclub party, with ideas for music, decorations and recipes. They included many important objects from the book, including mousetraps, wishing stones and Ren’s candy. They even made McGinty’s watch! To see the complete menu, go here. I had a great time talking about The Good Thief last month with a bookclub from Manalapan, NJ that meets at the Monmouth County Library. My mother was a librarian, so these library gatherings are dear to me. They just sent along this photo. Many thanks to Pat Whitehead for passing this along! Brooklyn Babes Bookclub

I spent yesterday with the Brooklyn Babes Bookclub, located in Dyker Heights. Their club has been going since 1997, and their meeting (hosted by Joann) included some amazing food, lots of laughs, and conversation about The Good Thief. Their president, Lisa, started the club after having her first child, and they’ve read all kinds of books–from Stendhal to Steinbeck. Thanks for hosting me, ladies! And a special thanks to Roseann for the delicious biscotti, and to Maryann, for the lift home. Books & Bars

Last night I appeared, big brother style, on a giant screen at Bryant Lake Bowl in Minneapolis. This was all part of a very cool bookclub called Books & Bars, that brings about 100 or so readers in each month to have a drink, skype-style, with authors and talk about their books. Highlights last night were: a dissected frog encased in glass (given to me by Rob Weisbach), an appearance by One Story author John Jodzio & Minneaplis based Replacement Press, who are publishing his fantastic collection, If You Lived Here, You’d Already Be Home in March 2010, my dog Canada barking, a display of my paper targets (congrats to Ben Trappey–who won one by guessing which character I had originally killed off at the end of the book), and readers telling me their favorite parts of The Good Thief. Top choices were: Dolly coming back from the dead, Ren reading The Lives of the Saints, the sharing of the dwarf’s toys with Brom & Ichy, and Ren’s big story at the end. I Heart Portland

A few weeks back I gave a reading at Powell’s Bookstore in Portland, OR (one of my favorite book-buying spots). There I met June Reznikoff, who told me her bookclub (who have been meeting for 18 years, and have read over 200 books!)was about to do The Good Thief. A few nights ago they finally met, and I joined them by phone. We had a lot of fun, and once again I got the feeling that if I ever left the East Coast, Portland is one of the spots I’d like to live.

My First Skype

I did my first bookclub via Skype the other day, with a public library in Clyde, OH. Many thanks to librarian Jill McCullough for talking me through the technology, so that I could meet the bookclub face to face. They broadcast me onto the wall, which made the whole thing a little big-brother, but it also allowed us to have our picture taken (virtually) together. Huzzah!

Over the weekend I spoke with a bookclub of mothers and sons about The Good Thief. These moms read books with their sons and then have a fun night of talk and food inspired by the stories. I think this is a fantastic idea, and am going to spread the word to other families I know. This bookclub had great questions for me, and also put together a fun meal, that included bottles of “Mother Jones’s Elixir for Misbehaving Children” (which appears in chapter 11) and even a graveyard cake (inspired by chapter 15).
